My grandmother, a woman of many words and even more action, imparted to me lessons that fashioned the contours of my character. She taught me first to be transparent. “Let the world see you as you are,” she would say, her voice steady as the ticking clock in her kitchen. The second lesson was about the courage to support others. “Stand up for people in need,” she instructed, her eyes alight with the fire of a lived conviction.
These were not merely suggestions but directives, spoken with the authority of someone who had faced down her own battles and emerged with the unshakable beliefs. It is those lessons that I ask you to bear in mind as I share the email below that I received yesterday morning.
In sharing this, I aim to be crystal clear with all my readers. If there has been any confusion until now, let this dispel it. I unequivocally support Palestine and condemn the genocidal actions of Israel's right-wing government and military. Should this stance not align with your own, consider this message your opportunity to part ways. While I am aware this may result in the loss of book sales, paid subscribers, and more, these are inconsequential when weighed against the humanity of marginalized people.
To underscore my commitment, 50% of the proceeds from my latest book, “We Alive, Beloved,” will be directed to organizations supporting Palestine and the Congo. If you prefer not to have your money used in this way, then—goodbye.
For those who wish to stand with me, you can order the book here:
