Every day racism is something so insidious, so ingrained and normalised that it slips by unnoticed and unaddressed. So thank you for once again, shining a light
The thing with the human condition is... no matter the skin we wear, we can so easily feel and identify with one another in art, in prose, in lyrics, rhythm, sound...
The information and the context to make it real surrounds us and we seem uniquely built to translate it...
That's what stories do, in whatever form... they bring us in and say walk with me... and we are built to not only walk but feel.... and identify - yes.... I too have felt this.... perhaps not the same but I recognize it's shape and taste...
Which perhaps convicts us when we refuse to see more than anything else.
So grateful to you for laying out the words and stories so beautifully. Whether they flow or you must pull them out ... it is not a cost-less endeavor. Also grateful to be able to complete that thought with a subscription. Your writing is searing and palpable and crucial. I am so honored to be able to do some teeny tiny thing to ensure you can continue what you do so well.
This was so vivid. Your words are always astonishing. The many ways in which the world works tirelessly to create and then erase these experiences is not always apparent but so important to identify and name…constantly. Especially in this current political moment. For how else will we imagine and create a reality without such imbedded violence if we can’t first define it, mark its origins and unearth the sources.
Just simply getting to the theater was difficult, before you even got to the movie. It infuriated me that they just couldn't tell you the time, because of course they had their phones. I've never saw the issue with helping out with that kind of question. I read this and can understand how much that all weighs down and compounds, but I can't truly *know* it because I have white skin. It makes me so sad, because I do see that narrative of always having to be "strong" and it's so devastating for our young boys and men with black skin. We see it too with men in Palestine. I see your softness when you do your campaigns to raise money for the kits for women, backpacks for kids. Keep showing that side, so many young boys and men need to see it.
Stunningly resonant. As a Black man, as a human being, I cringe in painful recognition……
an achingly beautiful reflection on a stunning injustice
Brilliant. Painful. Thank you for speaking so directly and poignantly to me. An old white lady. But never too old to learn.

Thank you, Frederick. And this is why genocide in Gaza is allowed to continue. Thanks for naming this every day racism.

Thank you for this.
Thank you.

Thank you.
I knew this as a masculine of center woman and even more as a Black trans man. Thank you for seeing me. I see you too.
I would tell you the time.
Brilliant, poignant. Truth. I kept thinking of Muhammad Ali. The strength that comes with saying no to the performance that is demanded.

When I started reading this I felt something familiar stir within me, and then you named it; Native Son. Thank you.
