Heard! I already pre-ordered from Bookshop.org to support independent booksellers. I appreciate your integrity as it calls me to move in alignment with my values as well.
So important for you as a Black successful and progressive voice to speak truth to power!
Will there be efforts to continue to create our own venues. What if we all converged on Black owned chain stores? Wow, do we have a Black owned national chain store? Do we think because it is not as big as those that take our dollars and reside in every mall, that these Black owned businesses will have less meaning and impact?
Is it the size of the “market”?
Or
Is it the power of the seed?
They think that they can bury us, yet we are seeds that grow through the dirt!!
Help us to help each other. Consider helping us to establish a new national literary marketplace! If we build, the people will come
Going to order two copies ( not from Target) of your book today!
Me, too. Bookshop.org supports my local independent bookstore. Also, queerbooks.com in Philly is a great source of queer books as well as other authors from marginalized communities.
Bravo! I had already decided not to shop at Target anymore. In the case of Target there are complications. They employ many non-white people, and their stores are often in or very near lower income neighborhoods, which means they are the go to for many reasons. With slightly different reasons, Amazon is hard to give up (they often are the source for hard to find items), but they are evil. Independent and even black and minority owned businesses are pretty accessible where I live, so while I may have to travel a bit farther I am less impacted than many. The battle for anything remotely approaching equity will be long and hard.
This hit extra hard as a debut (queer) author whose book is coming out in April. I'm English so don't have a Target to boycott but this post is really, really does resonate. Thank you for sharing. Your words are so vital.
I was involved in selling The Black Friend to Target. Personally and professionally, it is hard to stomach seeing a retailer that I though had a moral compass cave to the pressures of fascism.

Great idea! Thank you for the reminder.
Your integrity and commitment to justice and liberation are a lighthouse, thank you ❣️
I’m lucky to have a locally owned bookshop in my neighborhood that carries your work. I’ll continue to support you and them! Appreciate this post.

Thank you for letting us know.
I didn't order from Target but I did order from another organization that is loosening its commitment to supporting Black voices.
Thanks to your recommendation, I'll order this from one of your recommended bookstores.
Ideally we'd see more information like your requests so we can all help our favorite authors even more by purchasing from recommended bookstores.
Okay. I canceled my previous pre-order from a Big Box Store that is showing indifference to DEI and placed it with one of your recommended bookstores.
And I shared this with my book group (we're reading this for our February-March book) and they're buying from indie bookstores as well.
🎉🎉🎉
I am happy to honor this request. I also pre-ordered your book. You are a brilliant writer and a man of integrity.
Thank you for offering alternatives for pre-order.
Love - LOVE my Uncle Bobbie’s for books (and coffee)!
Bravo! I’ve shared. Thank you 🙏🏽
I will never shop at Target again. For anything.
A level playing field? Oh no!
Can we pre-order directly from you?
What is your take on this? Have they reached out to you or your publisher? https://www.retaildive.com/news/target-ends-dei-initiatives-belonging-inclusion/738356/
