Had to come back and tell you I’ve been playing this album on repeat for hours now; thank you for such a poignant reminder in music’s ability to act as a mirror and keep us moving forward. This beautiful was essay was what I needed -- thank you for sharing such closely held moments with us.
I am so sorry for your loss. At a time when we are all collectively grieving so much, I can’t imagine how difficult it is to feel that personal pain too. This essay was a balm I needed this morning- thank you for putting it out into the world ♥️
I am so glad you wrote this; I have had it running on a loop in my head for weeks now. The song has so many powerful moments, but I always get a catch in my throat when he sings talk to me / so you can see / what’s going on. Despite everything so big and tragic and seemingly unmissable around him, he’s beseeching people so gently to just pay attention--even if he doesn’t have any answers.
Thanks for sharing these personal memories with us, Frederick.
Fred, this was so good. Your writing is both evocative and enveloping. Appreciating music and the power in it is life affirming. I write about my experience of music, and it brings me peace. To quote Stevie Wonder: Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand...
It is so hard to lose friends, because they are the family we choose. May his light continue to shine on you as you are a light to many. My deepest sympathies to you & his family. Thank you for being you and articulating what so many of us feel but are at a loss to communicate. We appreciate you and stand in the gap with you.🙏🏾
Your words have provided my soul with some much needed soothing. Music does indeed have the power to heal us, hold us, push us to action, and remind us to rest.
Thank you for making me remember that there is still tenderness in the world.
